politician, and a key architect of Sierra Leone's 1991 Constitution, passed
away in Freetown on August 2, 2024, after a brief illness. Abdulai Osman Conteh,
he was a significant figure in Sierra Leonean politics and law, known for his
extensive public service and contributions to the nation's legal and political
landscape.
Dr. Conteh's political career was marked by several high-profile positions. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1977 to 1984, Minister of Finance from 1984 to 1985, and Attorney-General and Minister of Justice from 1987 to 1991. In 1991, he was appointed First Vice President and Minister of Rural Development under President Joseph Saidu Momoh.
He held this role until 1992 when a military junta ousted the government. Dr.
Conteh also represented Kambia District in Parliament from 1977 to 1992,
demonstrating his longstanding commitment to public service and his
constituency.
After his political career in Sierra Leone, Dr. Conteh spent several years in Belize, serving as Chief Justice. His tenure in Belize further cemented his reputation as a respected legal mind.

for the position of Chairperson of the African Union Commission, although he still needs to win the post.
