Applications for the 2025 University Malaya (Um) Bright Scholarship in Malaysia are now being accepted. The University Malaya (UM) Bright Scholarship is a comprehensive scholarship program designed to find and attract exceptional applicants (both citizens and non-citizens) from top universities worldwide to study for a Doctorate (PhD) in research mode at the University Malaya (UM).


      Through this program, UM aims to achieve the following

attract the brightest and most gifted people from around the world and generate PhD graduates who can change the world for the better; Boost the output of research by publishing high-caliber works;

UM Bright Scholarship awardees have established contacts that can be leveraged to strengthen academic collaborative research networks. Additionally, UM can enhance its global profile by drawing top PhD applicants from prestigious universities.

    Scholarships Benefits

  • Allowance: RM3,500 per month for 42 months
  • Seven semesters of fee waiver
  • The University will not cover any costs associated with preparing agreement documents, passports, insurance, visas, airline tickets, medical exams, or lodging.

    Fields Of Study

  • The study's field needs to fall into one of the ten UM thrust areas.

    Depending on the merits of each situation, the University Management retains the right to choose any relevant field for the scholarship offer.

  Eligibility Criteria

The applicant’s age must not exceed 30 years in the year of application

The minimum academic qualifications required to apply are as follows
  1. A bachelor's degree with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.70 (or an equivalent qualification that is recognized);
  2.  a master's degree through research, coursework, or a mixed mode (dissertation and coursework) with honors and a cumulative GPA of 3.70/4.00.

Non-citizens must have the following English language qualifications:
  • a) IELTS (Academic) with a score of at least 6.5; or
  • b) TOEFL 73-93; or
  • c) CEFR B2

    Note: The English test's validity period is two years from the exam date.

    The candidates cannot have received funding or sponsorship from any other group or individual.

       Application Procedure

Fill out the following form and attach the necessary documents.

  1. passport-size photo
  2. filled-out UMES application
  3. Proof of publishing, limited to the first page
  4. A duplicate of the applicant's ID card
  5. Copies of the bachelor's degree-level certifications and academic records
  6. copies of master's degree-level certifications and academic records
  7. a current certificate from the IELTS, TOEFL, or CEFR that was obtained no more than two years after the exam date.
