APC's Minkailu Koroma urges opposition to pay attention to the ongoing Constitutional Review Process in the 6th Parliament.

Minkailu Koroma, a member of the All People’s Congress (APC) Party, has called on the opposition leadership in Sierra Leone's 6th Parliament to prioritize and diligently follow two critical legislative processes currently underway.

Firstly, Koroma emphasizes the importance of the ongoing review and amendment of the Criminal Procedure Act of 1965. This significant undertaking aims to modernize the outdated legal framework to better align with contemporary standards of justice and human rights.

The original Act, while foundational, no longer adequately addresses the complexities of modern criminal justice issues. By focusing on this review, the opposition can ensure that the revisions promote fairness, efficiency, and the protection of civil liberties.

Secondly, Koroma highlights the importance of the ongoing constitutional review process. The Constitution, as the supreme law of the land, requires thorough and careful revision. This review presents a rare opportunity to incorporate necessary reforms that can strengthen democratic governance, enhance the separation of powers, and safeguard the rights of citizens.

Particular attention should be paid to the non-entrenched clauses, which are easier to amend and can significantly impact the country's legal and political landscape. Active participation from the opposition is crucial to ensure that the review process is inclusive, transparent, and reflective of the diverse interests and aspirations of all Sierra Leoneans.

Koroma asserts that the opposition’s role extends beyond mere critique; it involves constructively contributing to the development of robust legal and constitutional frameworks. Their involvement is essential to foster a balanced and holistic approach to lawmaking, ensuring that the resulting amendments and reforms are comprehensive and beneficial for Sierra Leone's long-term stability and progress.

By diligently following these legislative processes to their logical conclusions, the opposition can help reinforce the rule of law and uphold democratic principles in Sierra Leone. The review and amendment of the Criminal Procedure Act and the constitutional review process are crucial for modernizing the legal system and ensuring that it meets contemporary needs and standards.
