A meeting was recently called by the All Peoples Congress Party (APC) to inform its members about the work being done by the tripartite committee that is in charge of examining and modifying Sierra Leone's electoral system.
Opening the meeting, National Secretary General Lansana Dumbuya reaffirmed the party's commitment to openness and informing its members. He underlined the commitment of the leadership to guaranteeing an equitable and efficient voting process for every Sierra Leonean. Dumbuya assured members of a successful conclusion and urged patience and faith in the committee's work.
In a statement, the committee's co-chair, Kaifala Marrah, expressed gratitude to the party for trusting them to represent it on the committee and assuring them that all will go according to plan. He reviewed their rollouts and the circumstances that led to the committee's formation concerning the June 2023 elections.
He also stated that the committee must critically examine
the 2023 elections and beyond to determine the difficulties and likelihood of
success as well as to make recommendations for future events.
He explained that the committee's work is divided into four stages: internal preparation; national preparation; getting every institution committed to identifying experts and bringing them to the nation; committee review and recommendation-making; and implementation of the projected recommendations.
"After both parties have signed the memorandum of understanding." We have extended our gratitude to our partners, and I would like you to join me in expressing gratitude to the global community. The next step is that we have identified three key areas that need to be reviewed, he said.
These are: (1) reviewing every election held in the nation to identify its strengths and weaknesses and offer recommendations; (2) examining the institutions that work together to conduct elections in the nation to assess their composition and decision-making processes; and (3) examining elections management, which includes scrutinizing election results, voter registration, voter education, security, and other related matters.
He stated that to make sure everything runs smoothly and that the recommendations are implemented, they have a variety of experts who will collaborate with the team members in various committees. He also mentioned that the US and other organizations have expressed interest in supporting the review process and the implementation of the recommendations that are still pending.
He gave every party member his word that they could trust
the team to represent them in a positive light at all times.
