30-year prison sentence for a soldier who admitted guilt in a botched coup trial

Alhaji Koroma, a member of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), was given a 30-year prison sentence after entering a guilty plea in relation to the unsuccessful coup attempt that took place in Sierra Leone on November 26.

Koroma was one of twenty-seven active military officers who were in front of a seven-member panel and Senior Magistrate Marke Ngegba at a Court Martial in Freetown. During the trials, a startling 88 charges were made against the accused, illuminating their alleged involvement in the botched project.

The seriousness of the charges highlighted the importance of the trial by putting the participants in the purported plot at fault. As the court proceedings progressed, they provided a sobering reminder of the repercussions of rebellion and treason as well as an insight into the difficulties of upholding discipline among the ranks and the complexity of military justice.

The charges cover a wide range of actions intended to topple the government, such as rebellion, aiding the enemy, communicating with the enemy, stealing public or service property, fraudulent misusing public or service property, and the most serious charge of murder, which may be connected to deaths sustained during the failed uprising.

Alhaji Koroma, the first accused, entered a guilty plea on six counts of mutiny, aiding and abetting, and communication with the enemy after the charges were read to the accused. Additionally, he apologized to the court and to Dr. Julius Maada Bio, the president of the Republic of Sierra Leone. He added that he didn't do the deed entirely because he was accustomed to doing such things.

After pleading guilty to accusations of conspiracy, mutiny, contact with the enemy, and similar acts, Koroma was sentenced to thirty years in jail. Given the seriousness of the offenses committed, the sentence's severity signifies a major legal victory in this case.

Surrounded by distraught family members, he begged for compassion, tears flowing down his cheeks. He told his wife to keep their kids away from the awful truth and asked her to hide his sentence, saying he was just traveling if anyone asked.

This moving moment captures the heartbreaking sacrifice and desperation of a parent who is struggling to deal with the consequences of his actions, trying to protect his loved ones from the suffering caused by his imprisonment, and dealing with his own guilt and suffering.
