The APC staunchly asserts its unwavering support for the innocence of former President Ernest Bai Koroma amid what it deems a distressing and offensive persecution. Expressing profound disappointment and anger, the party denounces the allegations of his involvement in a coup d'etat, emphasizing his exemplary service during two democratically elected presidential terms.
Since
leaving office in 2018, President Koroma has been dedicated to fostering peace,
democratic governance, and smooth transitions across the African continent. The
APC condemns the current allegations as a perilous affront to the peace and
stability of Sierra Leone, considering them a dangerous precedent that
tarnishes the reputation of a statesman with distinguished democratic
credentials.
Despite facing what the APC characterizes as a sustained political witch-hunt marked by intimidation, harassment, and persecution, the party has exhibited remarkable restraint. It voices strong disapproval of the events of November 26, 2023, condemning any unconstitutional change of government while also expressing concern over the growing trend of one-party political dominance in Sierra Leone.
The arrest and prolonged detention of numerous APC supporters at various
levels since 2018 underscore the party's claim of democratic backsliding.
In
solidarity with its former chairman and leader, His Excellency Ernest Bai
Koroma, as well as National Organizing Secretary Comrade Bai Mahmoud Bangura,
the APC asserts its resilience in the face of adversity. The party emphasizes
its commitment to facing the current circumstances with strength and
determination.
As the
nation teeters on the edge, the APC implores the ruling SLPP to reconsider its
trajectory, advocating for a shift towards peace rather than fostering hate and
political division. With a plea for national unity, the APC recognizes the
collective responsibility to work together for the betterment of Sierra Leone.
Amid the
uncertainties, the APC assures the public of its confidence in the innocence of
former President Koroma. The party announces plans to convene and deliberate on
its next course of action, with a commitment to transparently communicate these
steps to the public.
